Digipak

Digipak is a style of compact disc or DVD packaging. Digipak-style packaging is often used for CD singles or special editions of CD albums to sell the Artist/ Artist’s music. The Digipak has a self-contained package that protects the disc from damage. It is shatter proof and allows for greater graphic display and market impact. The three section digipack sleeves opens up more design options because there is more room. However, they're more expensive than traditional liner notes and jewel cases. Digipacks can be more environmentally friendly than jewel cases because they can be made of recycled paper.

This is Maxwell’s CD cover as he didn’t have a Digipack when he released his single. (This is my artist for the music video)

Research and planning

Better by Bow wow ft T pain

This music video is an R&B song and has a storyline which is relates to my music video, throughout this music video it sends a message showing a single mother struggling to cope with her child and being around negative people. The song used a variety of shots like long shot, close up, medium shot, establishing shot. i liked how they use the close up on the mother's face to show her emotions and the state she was in. I also liked the way the artist had a different background and was separated from the stotyline because it shows that he is telling the story and that the music video is also selling out the artist.
This relates to my music video because the artist this music video because the storyline quite similar, both music videos have a single parent mother who is struggling to cope. I also liked the fact that they had signs to show what scene was located at for example 'Rico Groceries' I have decided I am going to also use this in my music video,  particulary at the scene where the mother has cancer, I could use the a sign at the hospital which says 'oncology'
The song expresses the feeling of being alone and not  letting people put you down. I chosed this music video to give me ideas of different type of shots I can use. What I really did like  was the black and white which i would like to use for flashbacks in my music video. I also liked the smooth transition from the storyline to the  artist. Also they had signs for a specific area to show where they are setting which was really cool and prevent confusing the viewers.

Do you think of me by Misha B
I really liked this music video; it had a good beat and energy. The storyline  is about a daughter not seeing her father for a while and don’t understand why he never sees her. They also had a lot of different types of shots such as high angle, low angle, establishing shots and close ups. They used various props like a photo which I am going to also use in my music video to show the good memories of the daughter being young with her father. The setting is base in a house and the artist is singing in the basket ball court and on a roof top which makes the Artist look glamorous and important because you’re also selling out the artist.  They also use flashback of the good times and the relationship the mother and son had which is also what I am going to use but in black and white to show the difference.

Beneath your beautiful by Labrinth ft Emeli Sande
This music video is very unique and didn’t have a storyline but it still appealed to me because I found the way they had one of the artist on a projector and the other artist playing the piano to show he is singing to her. The song is called beneath your beautiful and the use of having a huge projector of Emeli sande face express where the beauty is. I like the way is they made it look different from other music videos, it went well with the song. This gave me and idea for my music video by using a projector to show the good memories of the son and the mother at the background whilst the artist is singing. This will be a great shot because not only I am selling out the artist, the viewers can understand the story and show the artist relating to the story.

What editing techniques do you plan to use in your music video?

  • Black and White
I chose to use black and white in my music video for my flash backs to show what's about to happen. Also the black and white helps change the mood and theme For example because my music video is going to be about a single parent who is living a tough life. The scene which shows the mother is struggling is going to be in black and white to show a depressing mood.
  • Sepia
I may include Sepia in my music video because whilst I was researching other music video which relates to my storyline, they used sepia and it looked really good and made it look realistic. I think it will be useful for the scenes that is going to be setting in the kitchen and the bathroom.

  • Smooth Transition
I am certain I am going to use a lot of smooth transition in my music video to make it look realistic, this will also help me sell out the artist because not only that I have to show a story. I also need to show the artist  is singing in most of the shots, so using smooth transition will help me do this.
  • Jump cut and Graphic match
I am going to use Jump cut for a specific scene which is when the mother is in the hospital  walking towards the door that says oncology, she is going to be filmed in a long corridor therefore I thought the use of having a Jump cut would be a great idea. I am also going to be using a graphic match to show that the artist singing is the little boy. By doing this I am going to film the Artists eyes which will also be a close up and then I am going to shoot the little boy eyes which will show the contrast.

  • Slow motion
I am also going to include slow motion because I feel that this is a good technique to show the mothers emotions. Also we are going to have good memories with the son and mother which will be shown in slow motiom because during my research I have notice that a lot of other music video's use slow motion.

Breakdown Sheets

My Survey Results

I gave out my surveys to 20 people and from looking at the results below, the majority of people listens to R&B/Hip Hop music. This result gave me confidence because my music video genre is R&B but specifically soul music. Also whilst planning my music video, I especially wanted to subvert the stereotype of R&B music.

Another question I mentioned was if people do actually like watching music videos, this is important because some people listen to music and don't focuse much on the music video. From looking at my results, 17/20 people do like watching a music video. This gives me the confidence in knowing that my viewers will increase.

My music video is going to have a moral message because I am going to have a storyline in my music video so its important for me to know if people do relate and learn from the messages in the music video. Katy Perry Fireworks music video appealed to so many people and she had a moral lesson in it. This will benefit us from gettingmore viewers and from looking at our results 16/20 people said yes to having a moral message.

Research and Planning

Research and planning for Our Music video
Maxwell – This woman works

Our music video (my partner and I) is going to be about a mother going through struggles being a single parent and not being able to cope. On top of that, she finds out she is suffering from cancer and she doesn’t have enough money to pay the bills because of this she finds it hard to give attention to her only son. Her son on the other hand is talented at dancing and shows how much he wants to make his mum proud. Throughout the music video you will realise the twist to the music video. Which is that the Artist who is going to be singing to the song is actually the son, the artist is singing in the past and realising the struggles his mum were facing. We have decided to use flash backs of the bad times which is about to in black and white and then begin the story with the good memories which will be in colour. Our music video will include a moral lesson which relates to anyone who is aged 18-40 and going through a tough time. The song reflects how hard the mother’s life is.

Location
We are going to be setting our music video in many different location, this includes in a flat, estate, park, garden, stage for the dance performance and hospital. We going to use an estate area to show that the family is from a lower class and this can relate to some viewers. We are going to use the park to show the fun memories with the mother and son. The garden would be used for the artist singing and the mother running, to show she’s gone. We have asked permission to use the hospital to shoot the mother walking to one of wards for people that have cancer. We thought this would be a great idea to shoot her walking towards the door so we can see her facial expression.

My Music Video Animatic

Feed backs

We got a lot of feedback from our class mate which was very useful and helpful, the positive comments we got were that we had a very interesting storyline and that our viewer would want to watch it from the start to the very end. From hearing this information we are confident that our audience will want to watch our music video throughout and having a good storyline will increase the amount of viewers because some people can relate to the storyline.

However our improvements and advice were that to make our storyline much more clearer and not  make the narrative complicated to the viewers. Also we are going to use flashbacks and we were told that we should have a slight haze to show its a flashback. Another thing they mentioned was that some of our shots were taking to long. To avoid this we decided to add in a lot of shots of the Artist  singing to show that we are also selling out the artist and not to confuse to music video for a movie.

Influential Music Vidoe

Fireworks by Katy Perry

Fireworks by Katy Perry is such a good music video becacuse it is catchy, energetic and has a moral lesson. As well as this, the music video won the best video of the year. They used a lot of different shots in the video such as establishing shot, medium shot and CGI. It was fast pace and had a good mix of vocal point. Also their was a few acting of different people going through struggles, this includes parents arguing, bullying and sexuality change. This already appeals to a wide range of people to become more bold and free.. This was used to relate to what the songs about and the fireworks was used to express the feeling of being proud of who you are.

Rolling in the deep by Adele

Rolling in the deep by Adele is such a unique music video, the artist expresses her feelings about a past relationship and it is very clear for a viewer to know she is very angry. It has fast pace and is very catchy and the Artist is posistioned sitting down on a chair in an empty house. In the music video, they have used a variety of shots such as shot reverse shot, long shot and medium shot. The plates getting smashed and the hundreds of cups of water all shows anger and the drums in the background shows of the artist fustraition. In the music video, they also have symbolic objects to reflect the lyrics. Rolling in the deep won best editing and cinematography in a vidoe, as a viewer I really liked how different the music video was and how it didn't need a dance routine or a storyline to express the mood of the song.

 Walk by Foo Fighters

Walk by Foo Fighters won the best rock video, this music video was humerous and entertaining. It had narrative throughout the video the lyrics matched the drame to the song. It also had different types of shots and editing skills for example establishing shot, eyeline match and shot reverse shot. The music video is very memorable due to having performance and making some of the band members acting as someone else in different scenes of the video, It was very fun to watch.

Influential music videos

Black or White by Michael Jackson
My first choice is Black or White by Michael Jackson, I chose this a as an influential and memorable music video because the video starts of with a drama of a little boy messing about in his room listening to Michael Jackson, then his dad gets angry at the amount of noise he is making. The drama then turns into Michael Jackson Black or White music coming on very loud that the dad gets blown away to another destination. This music video is full of comedy so as a viewer it will make you laugh and remember the song. This music video is set in different locations and Michael Jackson is seen dancing with people from different ethnic groups, this relates to the song title and the reason why it’s such a great music video is because it also sends a message that whether you’re black or white you still can have a good time.
Independent woman by destiny child
My second choice is independent woman by destiny child; I chose this is an influential music video because it subverts the stereotype of R&B music, instead of having woman half naked dancing in the video, Beyonce Knowles, Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams sing about being independent, hard working ladies. This music video is full of energy and expresses that woman are also powerful and smart. They use the movie Charlie angles to relate to their theme and show a few clips of the movie. This makes the viewer aware of the film and music video so that the music video will become memorable. They use different camera angles and have the ladies sitting behind the table to show that they are the bosses.
Louder by DJ Fresh Ft Sian Evans
My third choice is louder by DJ Fresh ft Sian Evans, I chose this as an influential music video because it s unique and doesn’t have a storyline but still the song is very catchy and the music video goes with the song. In the music video is shows professional people roller blading, having a good time. They used only one location and effects like slow motion; this music video is full of energy and makes the viewer want to jump up and down and enjoy the music. There are so many different types of shots and it’s full of colour which brings an exciting mood.

Thursday 19 July 2012

In class, Ie presented our Music video ideas to the class. I had to pitch my chosen song and the reason why I have chosed this. My music video is Climax by Usher. I want my music video to be completely different from the actual and to have a storyline in it also I want my music video to subvert the stereotype of R&B. I did this to be unique and still make it a good music video.

My presentation went well and I managed to get some feedback to help me improve my music video. Some of my class mates mentioned that it might be difficult to use the idea of having a heart transplant happening in my music video. They have also asked how I am going to be subverting the typical R&B genre. I have said we will take it in the past by using black and white and the costumes the characters will be wearing will show that its in the past.

Another issue that might occur is the storyline confusing the audience and if the music video don't relate to the song. I have checked the lyrics and I Think it will relate to the music video. I will be mking sure I am taking shots of everything so the audience can understand whats happening. Overall we used good examples and expained who are music video is going to be aimed at.

Thursday 12 July 2012

My moodboard presents a old fashion mood, with black and white pictures and modern pictures, I used this to show the past and future. The used a lot of female images and some make to show that my music video is going to be based on a relationship . My moodbaord looks very modern and looks more nature. I did this to give an idea of where the music video is going to be located. I used images with instruments to reflect soul music.

Britney video

As a task we had to remake a music video of Britney Spears song 'Hit me baby', I learn't a lot about this project, the most tricky bit was making sure our movements in the song matched the lyrics. We used a ipod to play Britney Spears which helped a lot and made it much easier for us. I also learn't to be more creative and put ideas on where should we shot this scene and how should we shot the next scene. As a group we decided it would be a good idea to use the sports hall, so it could be more realistic. Ive also learn't how to edit the actual music video by using different types of effects like differ and dissolve to make it entertainig and real. I found the editing very easy for this task because I found it very easy to put everything in order and cut some bits out that wasn't needed.

Music Video

I have chosen 'Move your body' by beyonce Knowles to be one of the most influential music videos because the beat to the song goes with video because its an up beat R&B song and the video is set in a school canteen with children all dancing with the artist. This is uniques because you wouldn't expect this video to be filmed in a school canteen, usually the vidoe will be filmed  in a club.  It also has a dance routine though out the video which is very memorable and allows anyone to follow it. At the same time its teaching you the dance which makes it catchy. This video also has many techniques used such as high angle, low angle and long shots. I personally think its a great music video because its full of entertasinement and it goes against the steroptype that usually woman as an artist will be always looked sexual in music videos instead its with children dancing which makes it more enjoyable.

Q.7 Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in progression from it to the full proudct ?

In these frames it shows the improvements from using different types of shots in my prelum task, which I have progressed in my scary movie opening. In the first frame we used a lot high angle shot and used this in the beginning of the scary movie. We made the shots look better in our horror movie and we had to put the tripod on top of the table to make a high angle shot.

The secound four frames showed the four shots we used in our horror movie opening. The first frame shows an establishing shot, high angle shot, meduim and split screen shot. We tried to use as much of the shots in our horror movie but we made sure we used the main ones.

The third four frames is our prelum task, this is when we used the main shots. From doing this helped prepare   ourselves for our scary movie opening. I learnt to use the camera from different ways which will create various moods to effect our play.

Video On Demand

Video on demand (VoD) is an interactive TV technology that allows subscribers to view programming in real time or download programs and view them later, the concept is that with a VoD service, you can watch the TV programe or movie you want then when you want, without having to wait for a programme to start, worrying about forgetting to record a programme, or making a trip to your local Blockbuster video.

These are some companies that offer VoD such as: Virgin media cable tv, BT vision, Talk Talk tv, Sky digital, Top Up Tv anytime and Tv on a PC for example iplayer.  The two of the most important opportunities surrounding Video-on-Demand and other aspects of new market developement, and the threats to exploiting the commercial potential of these arising from the truly global problem of audio-visual copyright and infringement.

  • Video-on-Demand, whether accessed through TV or online delivery channels, is likely to replace the DVD rental market for films and a significant proportion of the film DVD sales market within a few years.
  • It is likely that that the UK film VoD market, worth around £115 million in 2009, will expand quickly and significantly over the coming years as new services are rolled out to consumers. Coupled with the potential to increase sales of „back catalogue‟ releases, as has been seen in the music industry with the growth of the download market, we believe VoD has the potential to increase total film video revenues, which currently stand at around £1.5 billion.

Q.3.What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

BabyScissors
'BabyScissors' is a small budget film and is the type of horror movie that will creep out an audience and make them remember the film and want to tell others about this scary movie. Me and my partner's production company name is 'Movie CO', and we have made sure are film is going to be successful.

I personally feel that 'The Weinstein Company' should distribute our film because the weinstein company is one of most popular biggest americn film studio that has produced so may successful films such as 'The King Speech,
The kings speech made $373,700,000 , This film was captured the imagination of cinema audiences around the world. It has become a critically acclaimed, worldwide box-office success. The weinstein company distributes this film very well by advertising. For a british film, the King Speech made a lot of money, by the mechandising and downloading websites and attracted the audience. Also the fact that it explores the royal history.

However the Weinsten Company has also made other various films that been published. such as My Week with Marilyn, the Artist and Halloween which also is a horror movie. 'Halloween' made a lot of money, $80,249,467. This scary movie is very popular and even made more movies for example, Halloween 2, and etc. Me and my partner feel positive that our movie  'BabyScissors' can become successful too.

I Think that BabySiccors should be shown at Cineworld and Odeon because these are two most known cinemas and is very local and has shown other dozens of movies. Personally i feel that the majority of people in the UK are aware of Odeon and Cineworld so its likey they will come and watch 'BabyScissors in these two cinemas.

Q.4 Who would be the audience for your media product ?

This is Chloe Vale....
My friend, chloe is a very cool girl, shes 17 years old and she lives in waterloo.. She loves watching TV, shes into horror, comedy and romance. Chloe plays a lot of tennis and badminton on the weekend if shes not doing that she probably be going shopping or partying... Chloe loves Coco pops a lot thats all she eats for breakfast. A lot of the time  Chloe likes to watch a lot of movies at each her friends houses. She likes to watch movies like Toy story 3, Honey, Stomp the yard, You got severd and Harry Potter. Shes into anything. ..... Her favorite scarey movie is The messeger, Halloween and all the Scarey movie.

Chloe goes on holiday to Spain a lot of times and Greece because shes got a lot of family there, Her favorite drink is Tropical juice and Mango Rubicon. She also drinks a lot of strawberry soda, Twist and Fruit punch. Chloe best place to eat is Nandos or Pizza hut .... She loves it there. She also likes a lot of Uk and America drama... Her favorite tv show is 90210, Fresh prince of Bel Air, The simpsons and ofcourse Eastenders. Chloe loves to watch  tennis matchs because she wants to become a tennis player.. her idle are Serena and Venus.  http://www.cwtv.com/shows/90210http://www.bbc.co.uk/eastenders/

I Think my film will appeal to Chloe because she into horror movies, reading this breif summary about Chloe, we can see that she is interested in all types of genres, comedy, romantic and horror... Her favourite scary movie is Halloween, the messenger and all the scary movie... From reading this text about chloe, i sure she will enjoy our movie 'BabyScissors'.

Q.1 In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and convention of real media products?

Our horror movie, we decveloped conventions by looking at other scary movie with serial killers such as 'The messenger;'Disturbia' and Mirror.
  • The conventions we used in the first ,seventh and sixth frame are props to jar filled in blood and hair which automatically lets the audience know the genre of the film. Also it makes it more mysterious and creepy. It gives a clue on what the scary movie going to be about.
  • The secaoud frame is shown by high angle to capture the victim on the floor hurt and is in danger, it shows the serial killers feet as it he is looking down on at his victim. The convention in this frame is the costume which shows in all frame. The serial killer is dressed scruffy and in black and the babysitter is also dressed in black and is dressed causal to create an innocent young lady.
  • The third frame captures the setting, the 'Serial Killer' house where the drama is mostly happeneds. The babysitter walks in the house carmly not knowing their she;s in danger. The convention we used in this frame is props, the babysitter has a hangbag and is wearing heels. Aslo the sound of her footsteps expresses the anticipation of danger.
  • The fourth frame shows the 'killer' is looking through the hole so the convention we used is camera work ,the 'serial killer' bending down to look through the hole.
  • The fifth frame we used was an etablishing shot of the house... The convention we used in the title of our film, the font type is bold and spooky.
  • The eighth frame, features the two characters, the first frame is a split scene shot showing the killer spiking the babysitter drink and the babysitter going through her bag. The convention we used is the prop, the white powder he pores into water.

Q.2. How does your media product represent social groups ?

Theirs only two characters that play in 'Babyscissors' , the victim...(Me) which plays the babysitter and the 'serial killer' who pretends to be a man who has children... The babysitter has a very casual look, she expects to be interviewed and is dressed in a black jumper, geans and boots. She's in her early twenties and her appeareance shows she's a innocent young lady.

Whereas the 'Serial killer' plays the pretend father but he really has an obsession for hair and murders young woman.... The 'serial killer' shows he has killed many other people that has been fooled by his charm... He has jars of blood and hair in his fridge which the audience witnessess before the babysitter comes in. Personally I think my serial killer reminds me of the serial killer that plays in 'Disturbia'

This is because he acts calm and friendly towards the victim and comforts her. This makes it more creepy for the audience because it lets them know that he is up to something and the 'victim' is in danger. This usually happeneds in a lot of horror and thriller movies so me and my partner thought it will good to have this in our horror movie opening.

I also think our serial killer acts the same way as the one in 'Disturbia' because he has dead bodies thats been kept in his basement and the setting is in his house, just like 'Babyscissors' the opening is set in the serial killers house and he also has blood kept in his fridge which shows he has killed before.
